Milena Velba Hardcire

debuts as director Giselle Sodre

The famed former Argentine dancer Julio Bocca made his debut on Friday as artistic director of Ballet Nacional of Uruguay Sodre with the presentation of the classic piece Giselle, with which you begin to rebuild the love of dance in the country.

The show, which will run until Tuesday 31, has choreographed the Uruguayan dancer Sara Nieto, who has lived for several years in Santiago, and as guest dancers Uruguay's particular Riccetto Mary Noel, the American Ballet Theatre in New York, and Brazilian Marcelo Gomes (also of ABT) and Thiago Soares (The Royal Ballet of London).

The scenery and costumes belong to the Teatro Colon in Buenos Aires.

"I want this to be a ballet, not Julio Bocca. I want to be the Uruguayan flag," Bocca said recently in introducing the season. "We have the level to do so and the desire of many people."

With that goal, the dancer in September announced that the Company will tour the countryside, for all Uruguayans lend their support to the dance as a demonstration of culture.

Bocca-artistic director of Ballet Nacional of Uruguay Sodre from 1 June-retired in 2007 after a public spectacle with more than 300,000 people facing the Obelisk of Buenos Aires.

His appointment in March was considered a very strong signal of the government to revive the official dance troupe. (AFP)
